Our History

The History of RoxFM starts in 1987 when the first Town Administrator called a meeting to set up a community radio station and to look at the various options available.

At the time, all available commercial, narrowcast and open narrowcast radio licences in the region were taken up or purchased pending future utilisation.

The original application from Woomera for a commercial radio broadcasting licence was for Woomera and Roxby downs, and, although approved in the planning process and still operational, it was not relevant, as the service would not reach Roxby Downs. The only option available was to apply for a Temporary Licence (for a maximum of 12 months) and then continue to apply each year for this Licence to be renewed.

In early 1998 a Planning Committee was formed to look at other options for the station, including separate incorporation and accommodation and set up costs.

A constitution was drawn up and 5Rox98 FM Community Radio became an incorporated body on 11th December 1998, with RoxFM later designated as the call sign.

Provision was then made for the radio station to be housed in the redeveloped Roxby Downs Cultural Precinct. 105.5 RoxFM Community Radio went to air on January 11th 2003 with a Temporary Licence and a dedicated group of local volunteers as On- Air Presenters.

On the First of October 2004 RoxFM received a full Licence.

RoxFM airs non-stop 24 hours a day, every day of the year, playing a large mixture of music to suit the Roxby Downs demographic. Everything from Rock to Pop, Latest Hits, Country to Jazz, to Children’s and Community Programming, Community minded, Community based, Community spirit, we are “LOCAL LIVE AND LOVING IT!”
